AVON — Battling a cold, Josiah Middaugh still managed to defend his Xterra Beaver Creek Championship title Saturday. The Eagle-Vail local and Xterra world champion edged out 20-year-old newcomer Sam Long in a close race Saturday consisting of a swim through Nottingham Lake followed by mountain biking and trail running through Beaver Creek. “This is probably the best field we’ve ever had so I was real happy to pull it off,” Middaugh said.
