Jury acquits man on animal cruelty charges

EAGLE — A jury acquitted a Gypsum man in the death of his girlfriend’s dog.Ryan Slater was charged with aggravated animal abuse, a felony, in the death of Journey, a four-month old pit bull. At the end of the three-day trial, a 12-person jury — seven women and five men — said he didn’t do it.Slater was motionless as the verdict was read, but members of his family pumped their fists in the air when Judge Paul Dunkelman read the jury’s decision.The argumentsDeputy District Attorney Joe Kirwan argued that Slater beat Journey until brain hemorrhaging killed the dog.Slater had said …
