Williams elected secretary of state, beats Neguse

DENVER — Republican Wayne Williams has won an open contest for the position of secretary of state, which oversees Colorado elections. Williams is El Paso County’s clerk and recorder. He defeated Democrat Joe Neguse, who serves on the University of Colorado Board of Regents. Williams replaces Republican Scott Gessler, who resigned for an unsuccessful bid for governor. Williams talked up his experience running elections in Colorado’s most populous county. His experience included running a primary election in summer 2012, when a wildfire forced the clerk’s office to be evacuated. The election results were not delayed. Williams has said he plans …
