DENVER — Republican Wayne Williams has won an open contest for the position of secretary of state, which oversees Colorado elections. Williams is El Paso County’s clerk and recorder. He defeated Democrat Joe Neguse, who serves on the University of Colorado Board of Regents. Williams replaces Republican Scott Gessler, who resigned for an unsuccessful bid for governor. Williams talked up his experience running elections in Colorado’s most populous county.
