THE USE OF JOHNSON AND JOHNSON VACCINE HAS BEEN PAUSED.

UPDATE FROM EAGLE COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH.

The CDC and FDA have released a joint statement on pausing the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to a very small number of cases of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis, a blood clot in the brain’s venous sinuses that leads to stroke-like symptoms (there have been 6 reported cases among the 6.8 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine administered in the United States).

This condition is extremely rare and occurs naturally in about 5 people per 1,000,000 annually. The rates for people that have received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine are not higher than these natural rates, but this does show the effectiveness of our national monitoring and reporting system to look more closely at these events.

Vaccine safety is paramount and we are responding locally to the information being provided by our federal partners. Public Health, Vail Health, and local medical providers have administered 8,331 JJ doses in Eagle county since March 4. We have not had any reports from clients or local healthcare providers of these conditions among residents of Eagle County that have received this vaccine.

Again, this clot development is extremely rare and we will await further guidance from CDC/FDA.

We will post any new information about this when we receive the information.- Vail Chamber
