Vail Daily column: Cloud seeding works, but won’t solve water woes

By Edward Stoner

In the arid West, the perpetual search for new water supplies, like the mythical search for the Holy Grail, has given rise to numerous fantastical adventures and grand schemes. Some of these have resulted in the impressive feats of engineering that have re-plumbed much of the Colorado River Basin, and some have remained fantasies, such as towing icebergs from the Arctic and building pipelines from the Great Lakes. Cloud seeding, a practice of trying to wring more moisture from the sky, has long been hard to classify in those terms. Water agencies and ski resorts have been doing it for …

Crystal ball sees success for American women

By Chris Freud

Tiger Woods had an 8 on No. 15 at TPC Scottsdale during the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Friday. I’ve gotten an 8 on that hole, so that’s really bad news for Tiger. Many refer to Lindsey Vonn as Tiger’s girlfriend. Leaving aside the sexist view of this — we don’t care with whom Ted Ligety, Andrew Weibrecht, Travis Ganong, Steve Nyman or Bode Miller are dating/married — there’s the athletic viewpoint. Right now, Tiger is Vonn’s boyfriend. As the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships come to town, it’s time to appreciate Vonn’s greatness. This is going to be her …

By Melanie Wong

as the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships descend on our tiny mountain town for the next two weeks, we’re all wondering how bad the parking will be, if Lindsey Vonn will get another record-breaking win and which skiing celebrities we’ll get to see from the stands or hopefully dine next to at dinner. Let’s be honest, hosting the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships is a chance for us to show off a little and prove that this is the place to be not just for skiing, but it’s also a mecca for great shopping, fantastic food and first-rate entertainment. …

By caramie schnell

VAIL — Each January, we ask you to write your love story and share it with Vail Daily readers. Last year, we got some real tear jerkers. We introduced you to Lane Gillespie and Jim Muguerza. The two got engaged near the top of Chair 11 on Vail Mountain in November of 2013, the same month that Lane, then age 29, started chemotherapy for an aggressive and rare form of small-cell ovarian cancer. The two tied the knot on the wedding deck near Eagle’s Nest atop Vail Mountain on Valentine’s Day last year. And then there was Candace Broecker and …
